Turn in hard-to-recycle items Sept. 26
In celebration of Pollution Prevention Week (September 21 – 27) the City of El Cerrito is partnering with the West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority to hold a special collection event at the El Cerrito Recycling Center for hard-to-recycle-materials.
Garth Schultz, Environmental Analyst, explained, “This is the first of what we hope to be several regular collection events at the Recycling Center in order to provide local collection options for hard-to-recycle-materials”.
On Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., El Cerrito residents (with proof of residency) can drop off:
Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes (limited quantities for bulbs and tubes – use caution to avoid breaking)
Mercury thermometers and thermostats (use caution to avoid breaking)
Pharmaceuticals (over-the-counter and prescription drugs) including expired and unused pills, syrups & inhalers in their original containers. Leave the drug name intact, and black out personal information. Controlled substances such as narcotics, tranquilizers, codeine, and anabolic steroids cannot be accepted.
Needles, syringes and lancets in approved containers. To obtain a free sharps container call 1 (888) 412 -9277. Replacement sharps containers will be available at time of drop-off. Other medical waste such as IV bags and chemo waste cannot be accepted.
These items will only be accepted during the special event. Garth Schultz, Environmental Analyst, urged residents to take advantage of the special event and cautioned, “Please do not drop off these items to the El Cerrito Recycling Center at any other time as it is dangerous, costly, and could cause environmental harm”.
People who cannot attend the event should properly dispose of these items at the West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Richmond, or via household pickup (for seniors and disabled persons). For more information on these ongoing programs, please call 1 (888) 412-9277, visit www.recyclemore.com, or contact the City of El Cerrito Environmental Services Division at (510) 215-4350.
