Greening El Cerrito Day Oct. 17

On Saturday, Oct. 17, volunteers will fan out throughout the city of El Cerrito to plant trees, to beautify the city and improve the environment. The effort is being spearheaded by the city’s Environmental Quality Committee, which is forming several Green Teams to tackle such other environmental challenges as preventing water pollution and reduce carbon emissions.

Greening El Cerrito Day will involve tree planting in the morning followed by the Making El Cerrito Greener Environmental Showcase from noon to 2 p.m. at City Hall and City Hall Plaza, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

The Showcase includes music, children’s activities, free food, and educational displays about the city’s efforts to reduce waste, recognize environmental achievement, and develop a climate action plan. The event will also provide residents an opportunity to comment on these plans, and to volunteer for the city’s Green Teams.

The city is seeking volunteer tree planting captains and team members to plant trees in front of homes and businesses. Free trees will be provided to be planted in the public right-of-way in both residential and commercial areas. For this event, the city will waive encroachment permits, and city crews will help select appropriate sites. Crews will also be available to dig holes, where required.

The deadline to request free trees is Oct. 1.
